“Mr. Bojangles,” Performed by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, and John McEuen
In 2022, the Museum celebrated the opening of its major exhibition "Western Edge: The Roots and Reverberations of Los Angeles Country-Rock," presented by City National Bank, with a concert featuring an all-star lineup. For the first time, that concert is available to stream. In this clip, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band members Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, and John McEuen perform “Mr. Bojangles.”
In 1967, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band introduced their eclectic mix of jug band music, Cajun tunes, vaudevillian novelties, and contemporary songwriter material. Their first single, "Buy for Me the Rain," received significant pop radio airplay. After appearing in the film musical "Paint Your Wagon" in 1969 and releasing a live album recorded at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, the band broke up.
Later that year, Hanna and McEuen attended a Poco show, and the two decided to reunite the band with an increased focus on country-rock. Previous members Fadden and and Les Thompson returned, and they recruited Jimmy Ibbotson to replace Chris Darrow. The band's fifth album, "Uncle Charlie and His Dog Teddy," included the Top Ten hit "Mr. Bojangles," written by Jerry Jeff Walker.
Made possible in part by exhibit travel partner American Airlines.
