Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally on Their Hit Musical “Shucked”

Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally have written hit songs for Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, Carly Pearce, and others, but the two songwriters enjoyed a different type of success in 2023. Clark and McAnally wrote lyrics and music for the musical "Shucked," which garnered acclaim during its Broadway run, earning glowing reviews and major awards nominations.

"Shucked" grew out of a less successful 2015 musical based on the famed country variety series "Hee Haw." Clark, McAnally, and writer Robert Horn collaborated on the first musical and reteamed for "Shucked." Although "Shucked" retains the corny, rural humor of "Hee Haw," it tells an original story about the residents of Cob County seeking help when their prized corn crop mysteriously starts dying.

"Shucked" opened in Salt Lake City in 2022, then moved to Broadway in early 2023. It earned nine Tony Awards nominations, and actor Alex Newell, who plays Lulu, won Best Featured Actor in a Musical. "Shucked" also earned twelve Drama Desk Awards nominations and won two: Clark and McAnally won Outstanding Music, and Newell won Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical.
