The Cultural Impact of Noble Blackwell’s “Night Train”
Filmed at WLAC-TV in Nashville, “Night Train” beamed into living rooms beginning in October 1964, six years before Chicago’s “Soul Train.” The late-night television program gave viewers a chance to witness many of Nashville’s best musicians backing both the city’s finest singers and out-of-town stars.
Produced and hosted by the late Noble Blackwell, "Night Train" was the nation’s first syndicated R&B television series to feature an all-Black cast. Here, Blackwell's daughter Tracye discusses his cultural impact, including organizing the first-ever hip-hop concert.
This discussion was presented in support of the exhibition “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues Revisited.”
