Frankie Staton and Valierie Ellis Hawkins on the Black Country Music Association

0 views · September 1, 2023 · Things To Do

Conceptualized by performers Cleve Francis and Vanessa Hill, the Black Country Music Association, founded in 1995, was designed to heighten the visibility of Black artists seeking careers within the country music industry.

“People who had never had an opportunity to do what was really in their heart to do finally were ackowledged by other peers who felt the same way,” says Frankie Staton, singer, songwriter, and leader of the BCMA beginning in 1996. “It was a great platform and support system.”

The Black Country Music Association is featured in this year’s installment of "American Currents: State of the Music" alongside the Black Opry in the "Unbroken Circle" portion of the exhibit. "American Currents," the annual Museum exhibition designed to offer perspective on country music's latest chapter, is open now through February 2024.
