Shannon McNally and Fred Newell perform ‘I Ain’t Living Long Like This’

Singer-songwriter Shannon McNally performs a song from her recent tribute album, "The Waylon Sessions." Discussing her song choices and the decision to cover Jennings, McNally says “I’d never heard a woman singing any of this stuff.”

“I Ain’t Living Long Like This” was written by Rodney Crowell (who’s also produced records for McNally), and had been recorded by Crowell, Emmylou Harris, and others before Jennings took the song to #1 on the Billboard country chart in 1979.

Hear from McNally and former Jennings band steel guitarist Fred Newell in this clip. Visit the Museum’s exhibition “Outlaws & Armadillos: Country’s Roaring ‘70s,” open now, to explore Jennings’s story and more of the music and moments that defined the 1970s in country music.
